A corded retro handset comes with one of three plugs on the end of its cord: USB-C, Lightning or a 3.5 mm headphone jack. They look different, they behave differently, and only one of them fits your phone. This guide explains what each plug actually does, so the phone-by-phone plug guide makes sense rather than being a list to trust blindly.
3.5 mm headphone jack: the original
The round 3.5 mm plug is the one wired earphones used for decades. It carries sound as an analogue signal: the phone's own audio chip drives the earpiece and reads the microphone directly, and the handset needs no electronics of its own beyond the speaker, the mic, the button and the volume rocker. That is why the 3.5 mm handset is the simplest of the three and why it works on any phone with a headphone hole.
The catch is that most current phones no longer have the hole. iPhones dropped it with the iPhone 7, and most flagship Androids followed. Some mid-range and rugged Androids still have it, which is why the option exists.
USB-C: digital audio through the charging port
A USB-C handset plugs into the oval charging port on iPhone 15, 16 and 17 and on nearly every Android sold in recent years. Inside the plug is a small audio chip that turns the phone's digital audio into sound for the earpiece and turns your voice back into digital audio for the phone. The phone powers that chip through the cord, so there is still no battery and nothing to charge.
Two consequences follow. First, the port is occupied while the handset is plugged in, so you cannot charge on the same cable during a call. Second, a USB-C handset is not the same as a USB-C charging cable: the plug looks identical, but a plain charging cable has no audio chip and carries no call.
Lightning: iPhone 14 and older
iPhones up to the iPhone 14 have the flat Lightning port. Lightning and USB-C are physically different and electrically different, so a USB-C handset does nothing in a Lightning port, even with a USB-C-to-Lightning charging cable in between. The way to get sound into a Lightning iPhone is an adapter with its own audio chip: the Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter. DialBop's Lightning option is the 3.5 mm handset shipped with that adapter in the box, so the jack seats in the adapter and the adapter seats in the phone, and it works as soon as you plug it in.
The same port rule applies: while the adapter is in, you cannot charge through the port.
Which one sounds better?
For a telephone call, none of them. Call audio is compressed by the network before it reaches you, the handset's earpiece and microphone are the same in every version, and the character you hear, the warm old-telephone tone, comes from the handset, not the plug. Choose by port, not by sound.
Can I switch later with an adapter?
Sometimes. A 3.5 mm handset goes into a USB-C phone with a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter that has its own audio chip (sold as a headphone adapter, not a charging adapter). A 3.5 mm handset goes into a Lightning iPhone with the Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter, which is exactly what the Lightning option is. Going the other way, from a USB-C handset to a Lightning or 3.5 mm phone, is not something we can point to a reliable adapter for.
